I’m sure I’m not the only one, but every now and then I tend to get a bit blue, for pretty much no reason. It’s nothing too serious, and certainly not something I worry about – I just end up feeling a bit ‘blah’ about everything, and not wanting to make too much of an effort to see people or do much. Instead, I hibernate in my duvet with a good Netflix session, or delve headfirst into a crafty project.
Anyways, over the years, I’ve learnt that to help myself feel a bit better when I’m feeling like this, is to think about all of the things I have in my life to feel happy about – reminding myself of them can do wonders for my mood. So with this in mind, I thought I would try doing a little monthly post to remind myself of a few things in my life that make me happy…
This year, we’ve decided we’re going to spend some time and money making our home just that touch more ‘us’. We were really lucky when we bought our house, as we managed to get a lot of the furniture included – great when we moved in as we literally had nothing! but over time, we’re starting to outgrow some of the older-style furniture and really just a few more modern pieces. I’m also obsessed with adding really nice little homely touches, so have been adding the odd thing here and there to lift rooms up a little while we decide on bigger changes like painting walls, and adding new furniture. Watching our house become more homely bit by bit makes me feel really happy, so I’m loving spending time doing it up. This is just a little snippet of our bedroom which we’re currently working on – I’ll be sharing the final makeover when it’s finished in a couple of weeks!
I made a promise to myself this year to spend more time reading. I’ve been a bookworm for as long as I can remember, but in the past few years I’ve not read half as much as I used to and I’ve ended up with a mammoth pile of recommended reads, or books that had been bought for me, that I hadn’t yet read. So, since Christmas, I’ve been making a promise to myself to read for at least ten minutes every day – I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but even just ten mins before bed can help me feel more relaxed and mostly I end up getting really into it, and spending a lot longer than 10 minutes reading. So far since then I’ve got through 4 really good reads and am almost the entire way through my fifth. So stay tuned, as I’ll probably be putting up a little Reading List post some time soon!
Writing for a living!
Some of you might have seen from previous posts that I changed my job last year. Although I’ve had various jobs over the years, writing has always been what I’ve wanted to do and for the first time in my life I can say that I am writing for a living, so this makes me pretty happy. I don’t want this to sound ‘braggy’ at all, as I really do just feel so grateful and lucky to have this opportunity. It’s not easy by any means – no new job ever is – and after a few years of working in jobs that I liked, but knew weren’t my ‘dream’ job, I know I’m so lucky to be able to do this. So I’m trying to relish every moment and really just appreciate that I’m doing what I love for a living.
One thing that never fails to get me feeling positive is a good ol plan. Arranging holidays/trips/plans to do in the future instantly gets me feeling all excited. So this past month, I’ve been trying to keep myself busy making plans – from holidays later this year, to weekend road trips or nights out with the girls. Being busy is one of the easiest ways I find to to feel more positive about things in general – probably because it stops you from dwelling on any negatives! But anyways, it does the trick!
Getting a puppy
Last but not least – and this one’s probably my favourite – we and my lovely fella have finally decided that now is the time for us to get a dog! We’ve wanted one for years, but as both of us worked full time and were out of the house from 7am – 7pm most days, it just wouldn’t have been fair to have a dog. But I now work from home a few days a week, and we’re both around on weekends, so we’ve decided it’d be a good time to get a dog. After nearly two years of living in our own house without any animals, we’re both really excited to finally have our own pup. I’ll keep you updated and will be sharing lots of pictures when we finally get our pup later this year! So exciting!
