January, while not my favourite month of the year, is always a good one when it comes to beauty and lifestyle. For Christmas, I always get lots of books, beauty products and lovely things like candles and new homeware pieces (my friends and family know me well!), so January always gives me a chance to fall in love with new books, try out shiny new beauty products and find new lifestyle favourites.
This January has been no different, and many of this month’s favourites are things that I got for Christmas, or that I treated myself to as a post-Christmas treat. First up, some of my favourite books from this month…
Made by Millie Mackintosh is one of the books I added to my wishlist for Christmas, and I was so excited when I opened it come Christmas Day. This book is full of amazing style, beauty, food, fitness and general lifestyle tips and advice from the amazing Millie Mackintosh. Millie is definitely one of my girl-crushes – her attitudes on eating well and enjoying a happy, positive and healthy lifestyle are really inspirational. I’ve read this through from cover to back several times since I got it and keep reopening it for recipe ideas, fitness inspiration and beauty tips. Definitely one if you’re looking at making 2016 a happier, healthier one for yourself.
Design Bloggers at Home by Ellie Tennant is another one that I’ve wanted for ages. I’m completely obsessed with looking for interior design ideas and inspiration and this book is full of amazing designs and interesting styles. I’ve already bookmarked so many ideas and tips that I’ll be using around my house.
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee is one that I actually bought for myself before Christmas, but hadn’t actually got round to reading. I love To Kill and A Mockingbird, so was excited to read this, especially having read so may great reviews. I’m only currently about 2/3s through (this is what happens when you have 4 books on the go at one time!) but I’m loving this so much. If you liked To Kill A Mockingbird, then you need to read this!
Enchanted Forest colouring book by Johanna Basford – finally, this book is one that I got for Christmas from my fellow GIPD Sarah. I’ve always been the person who would happily sit and do colouring in with nephews/nieces and end up taking over, so when colouring in books started to become an acceptable adult activity, I was a little more than excited. I’ve even invested in some nice (probably overpriced) colouring pens. And even though my OH tells me I’m a child, colouring in has become my favourite sat-on-the-sofa-watching-Netflix activity.
My only other lifestyle favourite is this beauty. I actually have it burning as we speak, and it smells DELICIOUS. I received one last Christmas too, and so when I opened another one this Christmas, I was a very happy bunny. Even though this is one of Yankee’s Christmas scents, to me, it smells so good that I will happily burn this year-round. As the name suggests, Snowflake Cookie is super sweet, with a hint of vanilla and cream. It reminds me of freshly baked, iced cookies and makes the house smell amazing. The large-sized Yankee candles are also great because they last an age – even if, like me, you burn them incessantly. So yummy.
Beauty-wise, there are a few new things that I’ve been loving this month. First up, and my favourite by far, is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit. So many bloggers have been raving about the Ambient lighting powders for so long, that when I saw this Edit, complete with six different powders, I knew I had to have it. I finally ordered it after Christmas, as a little treat to myself, and have been using it every day ever since.
It’s a little on the pricey side at £65, but I honestly think it’s worth every penny. I won’t go into too much detail, as I’m planning a full review sometime over the next couple of weeks. So stay tuned if you want some more info on this little beauty.
Second up, is the foundation that I’ve been reaching for on a daily basis most of this month. Late last year, I decided to stop using my Estee Lauder Double-wear as I found it was making my skin look a bit too cakey, but with oily skin, I needed to find something that was heavy coverage and mattifying without being too thick or cakey-looking. The L’oreal Infallible 24h-Matte is just that. It also has the added benefit of being 1/4 of the price of Double-wear! It lasts all day long, and I never have to worry that my skin is looking oily or that my foundation is melting off. It’s not quite the same level of coverage as the double-wear, but it gives a much more natural look and keeps my skin looking matte and complexion clear.
I’ve been teaming this with another favourite – the Charlotte Tilbury Instant Soft-Focus Beauty Flash Primer. This was another post-Christmas treat that I bought for myself. It was a bit of an impulse-buy and I wasn’t sure if it would be worth the money, but had read enough reviews to make me give it a go. This stuff is amazing. It’s super creamy and has a glowy sheen that, when applied to my skin, just makes me look radiant. It’s not too shimmery, but adds a little something that I can’t quite explain. It just makes my skin look so much nicer. I’ve been applying this with my foundation, and it gives a glowy finish to my skin, without compromising the matte-finish of my foundation. It’s a little pricey, but I 100% think it’s worth it – I can see this becoming one of my all-time favourites.
Another complexion favourite and one that so many Beauty bloggers had recommended was the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. As a Double-wear Concealer addict, I was hesitant to give this a go and presumed that at only £3.99, it just wouldn’t provide the same level of coverage as my double-wear. How wrong I was. This little lovely is super creamy, and lasts all day long. It covers even the worst of my blemishes, and gives a much less cakey- look to my double-wear concealer, which can end up looking too thick and creasing under my eyes. The price is also a winner.
Finally, winter has left my lips super dry, so this next product has been one I’ve been reaching for a lot. A friend bought me Mint Julips from Lush for my birthday last year and I’ve used it a lot, but I’m still only about 1/3 of the way through. Before that, I’d not used lip scrubs before, but as soon as I tried this, I loved it. I use it in the morning before I out on moisturiser and do my makeup, scrubbing my lips for a good 60 seconds. It also tastes amazing – I’m not sure if you’re meant to just eat it afterwards, but I do (it’s only sugar and mint so I think that’s okay) and leaves my lips tasting all fresh and minty. Perfect for anyone suffering with dry/chapped lips.
So those are my January favourites – what have your favourites been this month?
